In June 2025 we spent ten days exploring the sites of earlier floods, fires and cloud seeding in the San Gabriel Mountains, attuning to lingering residues and resonances from the foothills to the coast. The investigation yielded unexpected encounters: debris flow basins, hydroelectric dams, tide pools, missile defense systems, communication and defense systems, fire mitigation practices and flood and port infrastructure. We drove. We talked. The road itself became a subject. Concepts emerged in motion: contingency, incline or tilt, the problem of classification and framing. An ongoing investigation, the conceptual and formal shape of the project continues to emerge in subsequent iterations.

“Maybe we need to come back to our objects that aren’t our objects. What are they?
Other than, I mean, debris flows. Because we started with inclines and shifting ground and… Oh, right. Rocks. Off kilter.”
